What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves the insertion of thin, hair-like needles into specific points on the body. Stimulating acupuncture points supports healthy blood circulation and triggers the brain to release hormones that can reduce pain, inflammation, and relax the nervous system. Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years and has been proven time and again to be successful at treating and preventing a wide range of health concerns. It may be used safely in conjunction with many other therapies and has little to no side effects.
Other modalities of Traditional Chinese Medicine that may be included within a session include cupping, heat therapy, herbal medicine, food and lifestyle support.
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese medicine is a full scope, holistic medicine that works by activating your body’s innate healing capacity. It can be helpful for a wide range of concerns including, but not limited to the following:
Does acupuncture hurt?
The most simple answer to this question is usually not! You may feel the needle insertion, but there should be no sharp or painful sensations. Once the needles are in, people often describe feelings of warmth, tingling or heaviness; these are all signs that blood flow is circulating. Most people meditate and/or fall asleep during their session and wake up feeling refreshed.
How many sessions does it take to see benefits from acupuncture?
Every patient is different, and your acupuncturist will give you a customized recommendation after your first session. Most people often feel some relief after just one session, however, longer-term benefits of acupuncture are cumulative and improvements take time. We often recommend weekly or biweekly sessions for anywhere from 6-12 weeks.
